Ah, just listened to an old funky recording of Horowitz playing this simple song in Moscow in 1986. What an emotional concert it was – Horowitz returning after over a 60 year absence – a self imposed exile from the country of his birth. “Before I die” he said, “I want to see the country where I am born.”
Traumerei is a lovely little gem of a song – unassuming and fetching in it’s simplicity. I think it makes a great wedding prelude song – recognizable and even a bit ‘interesting’, and slightly out of the ordinary for a wedding piece. It’s one of Schumann’s most recognizable compositions, and was the title of a German made movie about Schumann’s life from 1944.
