Bicycle Built For Two, aka Daisy Bell or “Daisy Daisy”, one of the lighthearted selections on our Fun Wedding Songs album, will now be making regular appearances on the resurrected ship Cutty Sark, the only ‘Tea Clipper’ left in existence. This 19th century beauty suffered a near fatal fire in 2007, and many believed it would never be restored.
Built in 1869 to transport tea from China, she could carry more than 500,000 kilos of tea at a time. But over time, and with exposure to sea water and frequent rain, the old girl was in pretty rough shape. Restoration crews focused carefully on the frame. Then, massive amounts of teak and larch were located to refurbish the hull. And though some wish a replica had been rebuilt (at a substantial savings compared to the £50million restoration tab) she is nevertheless available for viewing to the general public in Greenwich, South London, accompanied by the strains of this delightful old-time love song that many of our parents and grandparents remember fondly.
Back to the song – suitable period music was apparently not easy to find, and somehow our Bicycle Built For Two was discovered and requested for use aboard the ship; we were happy to oblige!
