Gentle Shepherd has been played and sung at weddings for as long as I can remember. The chorus says “Gentle shepherd, Come and lead us, For we need you to help us find our way” and this is a perfect plea for a newly wedded couple for guidance from above. My arrangement turned out to be especially gentle and soothing. The solo violin is so mellow, and plays in such a low range, that it almost sounds at times like a viola or cello.
My instrumentation for this one was string section, solo violin, french horn, harp, and piano. I added a touch of almost imperceptible synthesizer “pad” in the background on portions of the song for added warmth and atmosphere. It almost disappears, not because you can’t hear it, but because the sound used is very dark, and as such doesn’t call attention to itself, but blends quite nicely.
