We have an emotional piano solo of Bridge Over Troubled Waters available for you to download. This Simon and Garfunkel classic from 1969 is not the most commonly used in weddings – but I thought it an appropriate message for a wedding prelude:
When you’re weary – feeling small
When tears are in your eyes I will dry them all
I’m on your side When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found….
I’m not sure what Simon and Garfunkel’s intended meaning was originally, but I think it transfers quite nicely to a marriage or friend relationship.
One of the beautiful things about this song is that the original hit version starts with a lengthy piano solo, and our version is almost note for note the exact same as the original, so you get that same feeling as when you hear that song introduction playing on the radio or your stereo. And, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn’t at least heard this #1 hit, and most of us can sing all or most of the words by heart. Actually, I don’t know if my mom would know this one, and if I remember, I’ll ask her next time I see her!
Paul Simon has written a lot of great pop songs, with thoughtful and poignant lyrics, and his music seems perfectly wedded to his lyric on this pop standard. Art Garfunkel’s voice is transcendent with his light lyrical quality, and his understated emotional delivery throughout the tune. I’m sure your wedding guests will enjoy experiencing this song during your prelude or postlude.
