I recently posted about the Harbour Shores Youth Group of 1988 or 1987. As noted in that blog, Mary and I, who attended Harbour Shores Church from the late 1980′s until about 2006, accompanied several of the youth group kids and leaders on a mission trip just over the border between Texas and Mexico to the town of Matamoros.
I had been in that area many years before as keyboardist and singer with the 1970′s Band “Selah” at an ill-fated “Jesus Music Festival” in Harlingen, TX. There was a ‘faith-healer’ guy there that reminded us of a three dollar bill; the weather was blisteringly hot, as it was summer, and it does get warm that time of year in the southern reaches of Texas. Other than that, virtually nobody came to the festival. I don’t think we ever got paid, but we may have gotten a couple meals out of the deal, and the music wasn’t too bad.
We did make some great friends there, like Rez Band from Chicago. I still remember Glenn Kaiser of Rez taking all of his flock [he was a pastor] out of the meeting when the faith healer was whapping people on the head and such. I was amused at the time, having grown up in a conservative home, that the rock and roll guitarist and lead singer in this hard rock band was also one of the pastors at their church in Chicago.
We also met the band Glad – Bob Kauflin, now with Sovereign Grace Ministries, and the rest of the band.
Okay, funny story – while we were there on the mission trip with the Harbour Shores Church youth group, for some reason I ended up out by the gulf with some of the team, and on a pier by myself, until I came upon a young guy fishing. Since I had had a few years of Spanish, I thought this would be a good opportunity to practice my language skills, so I asked him in my best Spanish what kind of fish they had there. He looked at me with an incredulous look on his face and with flawless English said something like “What did you say?”
If you didn’t read the other post about the Harbour Shores Church Youth Group trip, I’ll put a link to it at the end of this one – because while there I wrote a song with Tony Bolton, another musician/youth leader from a different church who I have since lost track of. The fun part to me is that when we got home, about 10 of the kids from the youth group sang on the album I was working on at that time, joining me on the choruses of “Together We Can,” the song Tony and I co-wrote. Thanks guys (and girls) for singing, and I would like to officially apologize to any kids who were part of that youth group, but didn’t get to sing. I don’t recall now how that worked…
I mentioned some of the youth group leaders we worked with in the other post at or about that time; I also remember Rob and René Hannus working with the youth, but I believe that was before our tenure, and before them our good friends Patrick and Estelle McCabe had worked with the youth. Hannuses ended up in South Carolina, and McCabes have been in Colorado for some time.
Here is the link to the previous blog post with names of all the Harbour Shores Church Youth Group kids who sang on “Together We Can,” along with some other interesting and fun stuff.
