Our family attended Harbour Shores Church (formerly Baptist) in the Cicero/Noblesville, Indiana are from the late 80′s until about 2006. Both Mary and I helped out with the youth group back in the day, serving with Fritz and Lynette Good, among others. I can’t quite recall if I was active when Shawn and Kristy Huck served, but it seems to me they were helping with the youth group when we recorded the song I’m posting about. Then again, I may be remembering another song I wrote that was inspired by Shawn….at the time in question, our daughters Emily and Elizabeth were a part of the Harbour Shores church youth group.
Mary and I accompanied the youth group from Harbour Shores Church on a missions trip to Matamaros, Mexico; as I recall, our youth group joined with several others at a compound where we spent our evenings before heading out the next day to do various things – building small shanties for the residents of that area is what I remember doing the most.
A songwriter and performer named Tony Bolton had made the trip from another church, and we started to hang out a bit, as we both played guitar and wrote songs. I think the two of us played for some of the evening worship times, but to be honest, it’s rather hazy in my mind…no doubt the youngsters who were on the trip could expand greatly on the events, and enlighten me as to whether it was ’97 or ’98 (or another year?).
We sat down one evening and wrote Together We Can, inspired by the people of that area and the idea that telling the world about Jesus was something that was for all of us to do.
Shortly after completing the song, I put the finishing touches on a recording project that included various family members singing on different songs; Emily and Liz sang what may have been the most popular song on the CD, “Rest”, also the album title; Emily sang a duet with me on When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, and Jesse and Liz were involved (along with Emily) on a couple other songs.
I thought it would be cool to have some of the kids that made the Mexico mission trip sing on Together We Can with me, so if you get the chance to listen to the song, you will be hearing a much younger incarnation of these “kids”: Amanda King, Besty Moore, Rachel Thompson, Elizabeth Millikan, Jennifer Kelton, Angela Yeary, Mary Myers, Sara Thompson, Emily Millikan, Rosalynn Prough, and Brad Linerode.
Since this is a wedding music website, I’m not sure the song will be available here… but if it isn’t, you’ll be able to find it at stevemillikan.com in the future. That website has not yet been built out, (as of August 2010); it may be awhile. I might be able to figure out a way to have the song available here sometime soon, so stay tuned.
**I wrote a love song entitled “I Would Choose You” for my wife Mary on the album “Rest”, which is the connection between our wedding music site, the Harbour Shores Church Youth Group, and my solo album.
